Karpathos is a Greek island belonging to the Dodecanese archipelago in the Aegean Sea located between Crete and Rhodes. It is part of the peripheral unit of Karpathos, together with Kasos. Karpathos is located southwest of Rhodes. With a length of 50 km, Karpathos is between 6 and 10 km wide, being the second largest island in the Dodecanese by its surface area. It is a mountainous island. The main population of Karpathos is Pigadia which is also the main port of the island. Its name in ancient Greek was "Potideo" or "Posidio". The steep Kalí-Limni mountain range (1215m) is, according to mythology, the birthplace of the Titans. This mountain range divides the island into two zones, one semi-desert and sparsely populated to the north and another well-irrigated and more densely populated south.
